Discover the Vendée Globe – The mythical race in Les Sables d’Olonne

Whether you are a sailing enthusiast, a water sport enthusiast or simply curious, Les Sables d’Olonne is the place to be for its famous race.

Heading for the Vendée Globe!

The Vendée Globe, the mythical solo race around the world, is a must for the resort. Skippers from the four corners of the globe compete aboard their 60-foot monohulls non-stop and without assistance. The goal: to complete the world tour, and of course to set a new record. The race was created in 1989 and is now one of the toughest in the world. Nearly 25,000 miles to cover against winds and tides, crossing the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans in the course of the seasons.

Which boat for this solo round the world trip?

To participate in the Vendée Globe, the boats must all be 60 feet long (about 18 m) with a draft of 4.50 m. These monohulls are the most powerful that exist because they are very well equipped and can exceed 30 knots. Today, skippers are equipped to sail around the globe single-handed and to withstand the various weather conditions they may encounter during the race.

The start of the race in Les Sables d’Olonne

The Vendée Globe generally takes place in the autumn between October and November and attracts many passionate and curious people!
